High scores, close scoring battles down to the wire and pleasant shooting conditions. All of these at the Boerne weekend where our three events pitted some top competitors in the country in friendly but spirited competiton. Our first match, a 4 target Club event for the Boerne Shooting Club, was taken by David Schmidt with a 2287.5000 aggregate. David squeaked by Rick Shouse by only 25 total points for a first place win. Jack Harper won Target 1 with a score of 2350, followed by Joe Chacon with yet another 2400, as the magic in the rifle I sold him peaked and promptly spun out of control only days after the warranty expired. Richard Shouse won Target 3 with 2400, and then Gary Grove scored big with a 2300.
The big event of the weekend, the Texas State Championship Tournament, hosted by the Boerne Shooting Club, came down to another squeaker with only 4.17 points in the aggregate scores separating Les Williams and Jack Harper for first and second places, respectively. Light and switching conditions prevailed, especially in the early targets, but overall it was a very pleasant afternoon and evening. Gary Grove jumped into an immediate lead with a 2400 score for Target 1, David Schmidt took Target 2 with a fine 2450, Target 3 was Jack Harper's with a score of 2450, as was Target 4 with 2350, followed by Les on Target 5, 2450 and then my pathetic 2350 for Target 6. Good shooting Les. You set your goal and achieved it.
Sunday, the Boerne ARA hosted a Club Tournament and it was all the Jack Harper Show as he posted four 2400 targets and an unbelievable 2358.3333 aggregate. David Schmidt was second with an agg of 2300 even, followed by Rick Shouse with 2258.3333 and then Les Williams at an even 2250 agg. Jack won Targets 1, 4 and 6 with scores of 2400, and Target 2 belonged to Les, and Fred Jamison blew past everyone with a 2450 on Target 3, David won Target 5 with a 2400 score. Great shooting Jack.
Thanks to all the attendees this weekend and, along with all our usual competitors, were very glad to meet and visit with Bill Middlebrook and Tommy Weston. We hope they enjoyed their visit with us and will return to shoot with us again.
Thanks to Steve Yates for his help with various duties including target handling and general being-there-when-needed, right-hand man jobs. And, I also want to thank all those locals who pitched in and helped get the range in shape for our Big Boerne Weekend. Thanks also to Jerry Hensler for towing his air-conditioned trailer over to the club for Polly to use and have the privacy to score all the targets on the scanner. A really nice, set up and greatly appreciated. And finally, thanks to Polly for her dedication in handling the thankless job of carefully handling all the scoring duties, breaking ties and dealing with a rowdy bunch of guys.
As our season winds down, with only three matches remaining on October 10, October 27 and November 14, I hope we can continue the growth and enthusiasm of our local group of competitors and grow our sport and club even more next year. Bring a friend.
